Allegheny Microgreens: Growing big flavor in a small space

Allegheny Microgreens: Growing big flavor in a small space

McKean County | Allegheny National Forest and Surrounds Landscape of the PA Wilds

Growing fresh produce year round in an area with consistently low temperatures seems like an impossible task. Allegheny Microgreens took on that challenge and is growing fresh produce year round in a small indoor farm. Located in the Allegheny National Forest and Surrounds landscape of the PA Wilds, Allegheny Microgreens is filling the gap in locally grown produce.

Allegheny Microgreens was established in 2020 by owner Justin Silvis. He recognized the need for sustainable, locally produced food within the region. His goal was not only to strengthen the local food supply chain but to also provide healthful clean options.

Allegheny Microgreens specializes in growing a variety of microgreens year-round. From peppery arugula to crisp sunflower shoots, each tray is harvested at peak freshness and delivered to local grocers and restaurants weekly, even tailoring their microgreens selection to meet the needs of customers. While varying from plant to plant, microgreens are also packed full of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants making them a great addition to almost every meal. Local chefs use them to elevate dishes like burgers, tacos and breakfast sandwiches, adding texture, flavor and visual appeal to everyday favorites.

Growing microgreens not only helps the local food economy, it also helps the environment! Allegheny Microgreens uses organic practices in a controlled environment to ensure consistent quality. Growing organic means they are able to reduce the need for chemical pesticides and fertilizers that can affect soil and water health. They also help offset the carbon footprint that is typically associated with traditional produce harvesting and shipping.
